3-Inch Heating Pipe Freezing at a Care Home in Newcastle upon Tyne

Yorkshire Pipefreezing Services was contracted to carry out a 3-inch pipe freeze on a steel heating return pipe at a care home in Newcastle upon Tyne. The freeze was required to facilitate the installation of an inline isolation valve while avoiding the need to drain down and refill the entire heating system.

In a care home environment, maintaining reliable heating is particularly important due to the needs and dependency of residents. Commercial pipe freezing provided a controlled method of temporarily isolating the heating pipework, reducing system downtime and avoiding the disruption associated with a full drain-down. The approach also helped minimise the loss of existing system water treatment inhibitor.

The Pipe Freezing Process

Before commencing the freeze, Yorkshire Pipefreezing Services assessed the existing pipework and the proposed valve installation to identify a suitable freezing location. Careful consideration was given to the position of the inline valve, the available working space and the expansion of the ice plug during freezing. Selecting an appropriate location was essential to establishing effective temporary isolation while allowing sufficient space for the pipework modifications to be completed safely.

Liquid nitrogen pipe freezing was used to establish an ice plug within the 3-inch steel heating return pipe. Once the freeze was established, the contractor was able to carry out the pipework modifications required to install the inline valve.

MegaPress fittings were used as part of the installation to help streamline the work and reduce installation time. This approach helped avoid the additional time associated with draining down and subsequently refilling the wider heating system.
The freeze was maintained for approximately one hour, providing the temporary isolation required to complete the valve installation.

The Result

The 3-inch heating return pipe was successfully isolated using liquid nitrogen pipe freezing, allowing an inline valve to be installed without draining down the entire heating system.
By avoiding a full system drain-down, the project reduced the potential for heating downtime, saved time on refilling and recommissioning the system, and helped preserve the existing inhibitor treatment. These benefits are particularly valuable in care homes, where maintaining heating availability is important for resident comfort and welfare.
This project demonstrates how professional heating pipe freezing and pipework isolation can help reduce disruption during commercial heating modifications. Yorkshire Pipefreezing Services supports contractors and facilities teams across Newcastle upon Tyne, the wider North East and throughout the UK with specialist pipe freezing for commercial and industrial heating systems.
